The EU imposes the halving of agricultural production in the Po Valley and Puglia. Poverty for farmers and hunger for all

One wonders what is in the heads of the bureaucrats, and of certain terrible politicians, in Brussels and what objective they want to pursue.

Imagine seeing the Po Valley without its vast fields of corn and soft wheat and the Tavoliere delle Puglie without its characteristic expanse of ears of durum wheat swaying in the wind. Yet this is the future involution of Italian agriculture, as reported by Corriere (so we can believe it, they are the most pro-European of all).

Starting from 2024, every year we will have to deal with this change, so it will not be possible to continue with the cultivation of the previous year. So if one year you produced corn, the following year you will have to produce something different, even if it is not economically convenient and if the market demand (i.e. what you eat) is different. Therefore the production of durum wheat for pasta in Puglia risks halving, and that of corn and soft wheat in the Po Valley as well. All decided by people who have never seen a boss in their life…

The fault lies in the detachment from the so-called monoculture practice established by Brussels, an obligation of crop rotation foreseen by the new Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union, in the name of environmental protection and sustainability. Always producing the same crops threatens biodiversity and impoverishes the soil, but suddenly stopping jeopardizes the economic balance of farms and the entire supply chain. Durum wheat is essential for the production of pasta and corn for animal breeding, and consequently for the production of meat, which in turn returns precious organic substances to the soil. Because in the expert heads of Brussels they have forgotten that manure is used to enrich the fields. But what times does someone who lives in the "European Bubble" of the reality of the camps know.

“The European Union, as usual, is more concerned with the environment than the market,” explains Vincenzo Lenucci, head of the Economic Area and the Study Center of Confagricoltura. “It's not easy to change crops, especially when companies have contracts with suppliers that require specific quantities of grain, and suddenly find themselves producing half as much.” The most obvious solution for farmers, if there are no further exceptions to the new rules, is to divide their land, allocating half to historical cultivation one year and the other half the following year. The result? A collection halved for both years, so we will have a sort of famine caused by legislation. The second option is also the most unlikely, not respecting the rule by giving up the community incentive package which amounts on average to 150 euros per hectare of wheat in the Tavoliere delle Puglie and 200 euros or slightly more per hectare of corn in the Po Valley.

These changes will have a significant impact on the great Italian plains, both in the North and in the South, with maize as the predominant crop throughout the North, from Piedmont to Lombardy and Veneto, and durum wheat as the characteristic crop of the South, from Puglia to Sicily. Obviously someone will laugh: the large American corn and wheat producers, who will export their cultivated products without caring about the rules of the European Community.
