The EU Commission has booked 30 million doses of the French Valneva Covid vaccine, despite the company only starting phase 1 and 2 studies in mid-December.

The portfolio of vaccines booked by the Commission is therefore expanding (8 in total).

All the details.

THE EU-VALNEVA COMMISSION AGREEMENT

Let's start with the facts. Today the European Commission has concluded exploratory talks with the pharmaceutical company Valneva in view of the purchase of its potential vaccine against Covid-19.

The contract envisaged with Valneva, we read on the website of the EU Commission, provides for the possibility for all EU member states to purchase a total of 30 million doses and another 30 million optional.

VALNEVA

Valneva, a company based in Saint-Herblain, France, is a biotechnology company active in the research and development of vaccines for the prevention of infectious diseases with significant unmet medical needs.

Founded in 2013 from the merger of Intercell and Vivalis SA and led by CEO Thomas Lingelbach, the company has several vaccines in development, including unique vaccines against Lyme disease, Covid-19 and chikungunya viral disease.

THE NUMBERS OF VALNEVA

The biotechnology company boasts (preliminary and non-certified) liquidity and equivalent means of 204.4 million euros, at the end of December 2020 , exceeding expectations (180 and 200 million euros).

This is an important increase in liquidity, compared to the 64.4 million euros of December 31, 2019, to which the 130 million dollars arrived in the name of the collaboration with Pfizer for the Lyme vaccine, the 48.8 million euro of net proceeds due to the loan agreement with Deerfield and OrbiMed, offset by 20 million euro of loan repayments to the European Investment Bank.

Valneva has offices in Austria, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, Canada and the United States with over 500 employees.

THE VALNEVA ANTI COVID VACCINE

Valneva's developed Covid vaccine, VLA2001, leverages Valneva's licensed Japanese encephalitis vaccine manufacturing platform , IXIARO® , and is the first inactivated Sars-Cov-2 vaccine. The drug is being tested in England : Phase I and Phase II studies involve 150 volunteers in Bristol, Birmingham, Southampton and Newcastle. Pending the first data, Britain has ordered 60 million doses of the vaccine candidate, with delivery in 2021, with the option of purchasing another 130 million doses.

VON DER LEYEN: WE NEED MORE VACCINES

Relying on the Valneva vaccine, for the EU Commission, is a necessary move.

“The continuing Covid-19 pandemic in Europe and around the world makes it more important than ever that all member states have access to the widest possible portfolio of vaccines to help protect people in Europe and beyond. Today's step towards reaching an agreement with Valneva further completes the EU vaccine portfolio and demonstrates the Commission's commitment to find a lasting solution to the pandemic ", commented the preliminary agreement, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

THE EU VACCINE PORTFOLIO

The Valneva vaccine, booked by the EU Commission, joins an already large portfolio of anti Covid vaccines booked by the EU, which has signed contracts with AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK, Janssen Pharmaceutica, Pfizer-Biontech, CureVac and Moderna and talks completed with Novavax.

There are currently two vaccines approved for inoculation: Pfizer-Biontech and Moderna.

No reservations by the EU Commission for the vaccine of the Italian Reithera , which has already successfully completed the phase 1 studies.
