Here are Netflix's latest moves and moves

Netflix's quarterly disappoints Wall Street but the platform has recovered from the post-Covid hemorrhage: to increase the number of subscriptions, the anti-sharing password tightening will arrive in other countries. And the offer with spot becomes more robust

After closing the year on a high note , Netflix's new quarterly is positioned slightly below expectations: for the period January-March 2023 revenues amounted to 8.16 billion dollars against the estimated 8.18. Earnings per share amounted to $2.88, above the $2.86 expected by the market, while the number of new subscribers was below expectations, at 1.75 million instead of the 2.2 million expected, for a total of 232.5 million subscribers worldwide.

The streaming pay-TV giant recovers from the post-pandemic hangover: last year it had to deal with the flight of 200,000 subscribers who canceled the service as soon as the health restrictions disappeared. But for Netflix it is urgent to find new subscribers, at least verify the actual number, so as to increase the data it presents to investors. According to the platform, at least 100 million subscriptions would have to be multiplied by two, if not by three or by four: in short, they would be used in sharing, violating the rules.

That's why Netflix has announced that it intends to bring them out by extending paid account sharing to the US and other countries as early as the second quarter of 2023, therefore within a few weeks. Until now, the pilot project had only been launched in markets, considered secondary, to avoid new mass leaks of subscribers and, at the same time, test the best control system.

NEW NETFLIX SUBSCRIPTION ANTI-SHARE CONTROLS

A note from the platform allows you to learn more about the control system that could soon reach us too. “When someone accesses your account from a device that is not associated with your Netflix household or if your account is used continuously from a location outside your household, we may ask you to verify the device before you can watch Netflix .”

The procedure involves sending a four-digit code that will serve to identify the device on which we want to use our Netflix account. The verification request, however, may also be requested periodically.

“While you're traveling or if you have more than one residential address, we want you to enjoy Netflix whenever and wherever you want. If you are the primary account holder (or live with the primary account holder), you don't need to verify the device to watch Netflix.”

FOR NETFLIX THIS IS THE WAY TO TAKE

The first tests of subscription sharing control began in February in some smaller markets for Netflix: Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal. In the Iberian peninsula, in order not to get blocked, it is possible to share the sunlight season ticket with a maximum of two other people by agreeing to pay the extra fee of 5.99 euros.

In a letter released alongside the latest financial results, Netflix spokespersons say they are "pleased with the results of the first-quarter launch, reinforcing our confidence that we have chosen the right approach." Also because the result of the subscriptions would have even increased.

ARE NETFLIX SUBSCRIPTIONS INCREASING?

But it is not only rigor that has increased subscriptions, as much as the launch of the subscription with advertising (called "Base with advertising"), introduced more or less simultaneously with the squeeze. You pay less, but in return you have to view advertising. All in all, in times of hardship, users, especially the younger ones, like a formula.

So much so that now the company has decided to increase the resolution so as to make this specific level of the service more interesting: it will go from 720p to 1080p. Furthermore, it will be possible to use the subscription with advertising on two screens at the same time, instead of just one as previously.

In Italy, the basic subscription, with commercials, costs 5.49 euros. Some users had pointed out that several films and TV series are not available with the lowest rate and the company has pointed out that the offer includes about 95% of the catalog available in the subscription without Adv.
