Intesa Sanpaolo, that's why there is no agreement on the short week with the unions

Skin-deep tensions in Intesa Sanpaolo on the 4-day work week. This is why the unions have rejected the bank's project and how the credit group led by Messina replies to the workers' organizations

Skin-deep tensions in Intesa Sanpaolo over the 4-day work week between the top management of the bank led by the CEO, Carlo Messina, and the trade union organisations.

Here are the details as they were written by the bank workers' associations.

THE UNIONS SAY NO TO INTESA SANPAOLO ON THE 4-DAY WORKING WEEK

What were the no's of Intesa Sanpaolo's top management according to the FABI – FIRST/CISL – FISAC/CGIL – UILCA – UNISIN unions?

The union statement reads:

“The requests of the Trade Union Organizations relating to the very important issues of Smart Working, working hours and related economic claims have unfortunately been closed by the Company. In particular, the Bank has not currently been available to:

  • extend Smart Working and 4×9, not even with the necessary modulations, to all Colleagues in the Branch Network;
  • identify technical tools that allow for real disconnection at the end of one's working hours;
  • increase the value of the meal voucher for everyone;
  • recognize the whole meal voucher for Smart Working days;
  • recognize compensation for energy and connection costs, as well as a contribution for setting up the workstation.

Despite five months of negotiations and some steps forward, these closures, incomprehensible given the more than positive trend and organization of the Bank, have not allowed the signing of an agreement”.

Furthermore, according to the unions, the bank "wanted to keep total discretion in the concessions of smart working and the 4×9 week and in any case declared its intention to continue unilaterally in the implementation of the new work organization".

We remind you – say the unions – that Smart Working and flexible working hours are an issue that concerns the entire Credit sector and that our National Contract is being renewed as it expires at the end of the year.

Finally, a warning from the unions: "We will verify the ways in which the Company will take unilateral action because any solution other than the provisions of the CCNL is unacceptable!".

TRADE UNION RUMORS ON THE BREAKDOWN OF NEGOTIATIONS FOR THE SHORT WEEK IN INTESA SANPAOLO

So far the unitary position of the trade unions. However, there are strong internal fibrillations at Uilca because the current coordinator at Intesa Sanpaolo, Simona Ortolani, and one of the national secretaries, Giuseppe Bilanzuoli, disagree on breaking off negotiations with the company. Bilanzuoli's distancing, revealed to the trade union table through his trusted Ortolani, would not be motivated by substantive issues addressed during the negotiation. In fact, qualified sources tell that Bilanzuoli would have targeted the seat of the general secretary of Uilca, Fulvio Furlan. It is a pity however that the latter, after the renewal of his mandate received last September, has definitively entered into the good graces of the confederal leader, Pierpaolo Bombardieri. Who appreciated, in particular, the change of pace of the organization and the departure from the previous management, that of Massimo Masi.

WHAT INTESA SANPAOLO SAYS

But what does the bank led by Messina say about the breakdown of the negotiations? Intesa Sanpaolo will propose to the people of the Group operating in Italy a new work organization model that meets the needs of reconciling the professional and working life balance of its people and demonstrates attention to their well-being, through innovative solutions of working methods with the objective to make the bank even more agile and dynamic, at the service of a more demanding clientele. This is what the credit group led by the CEO, Carlo Messina, puts on paper.

Intesa adds: “Among the main innovations, an evolution of smart working with the possibility of flexible working up to 120 days a year, with no monthly limits and a short week of 4 days of 9 working hours for equal pay, on a voluntary and compatibly with the Bank's technical, organizational and production requirements. Discussions with the trade unions, while taking place in a profitable and constructive manner, did not find a consensus on the overall content, but Intesa Sanpaolo, confirming its attention to the people of the Group, will continue to propose the best solutions to those who work in the leading bank Italian, introducing the new features from January 2023".

The proposal – according to Intesa – provides for the "possibility of increasing flexible working from home on a voluntary basis up to 120 days a year, with a meal voucher allowance of 3 euros per day, to also take into account the expenses incurred working from home, and to work 4 days a week, increasing the daily hours to 9 on a voluntary basis, for equal pay, without the obligation of a fixed day. From January 2023, the people who work in Intesa Sanpaolo will be able to individually access these methods, further improvements compared to the current ones, compatibly with the company's technical, organizational and production needs. An experimentation period will also be launched in about 200 branches"
