Just Eat, Deliveroo, Glovo and more. All the tensions between food delivery companies on the contract

Just Eat promises the employee contract to the riders, torpedoing Assodelivery (Deliveroo, Glovo, UberEat and more). Facts, numbers, comments and first reactions from the unions

Just Eat starts the revolution in the food delivery sector. The company has promised to have all its 3,000 riders sign a contract by employees, bringing the Scoober model to Italy, already fully operational in other countries.

The British multinational moves in solitude and thus separates itself from its competitors in the sector; but he chooses the lowest salary level he has found for his cyclists, without applying any national contract. Let's go step by step.

JUST EAT HIRES THE RIDERS

Just Eat is ready to hire its 3,000 Italian cyclofactors as employees. The Scoober model (this is the name of the app used by the riders) also debuts in Italy, based on the employment relationship, already used in 12 countries where the group is present and in over 140 cities, with more than 19,000 riders involved .

CONTINI: IT'S AN ETHICAL CHOICE

“The introduction of an employee work model for riders represents an ethical and responsible choice, in line with the strategy that the group is successfully pursuing in other European countries. It is a great investment, both financially and on people, which will allow us to work with contractually protected riders and also to further support the development of the service in Italy ”, explained Daniele Contini, manager of Just Eat in Italy.

HIRING STARTING FROM MARCH

Hiring will start as early as March. Just Eat will hire 50 risers in Monza, then a thousand in the first two months in the cities of Brescia, Verona, Parma and Reggio Emilia. Within a few months, all 3,000 riders in the 23 cities where the app is active will have a contract.

HOW WILL THE CONTRACTS OF THE JUST EAT RIDERS BE

Of course, not all that glitters is gold. And if it is true that with the employee contract, Just Eat guarantees hourly compensation, holidays, sickness, maternity / paternity, allowance for night work and holidays, insurance coverage, free safety devices supplied, mandatory training and social security protection, from on the other hand, it is also true that the multinational has chosen, writes Repubblica , "to include in a company regulation the lowest salary level it has found – 7.5 euros gross per hour, that of multiservices (cleaning) – without applying any contract national. It should do it. And that of logistics provides for 13 gross euros per hour ”.

THE COMMENT OF THE CISL

And perhaps this is precisely the point that does not convince the CISL, which commenting on the news argues that before starting the recruitment "we must first find a meeting point through which to establish clear rules and adequate safeguards for workers".

"The CISL has clearly stated that the comparison must start from a certain and recognizable reference framework for the application of the National Collective Labor Agreement for Logistics and Goods, a system of Industrial Relations that is participatory and the recognition of trade union and representation rights provided by the Interconfederal Agreement of the Consolidated Law. The logistic CCNL already offers certain references and coverage for female workers, for example on holidays, illness and accident, maternity / paternity, and has developed specific national agreements that already frame the figure of the cycle-delivery man and the minimum wages and working hours. . CISL considers the new Scoober model based on the employment relationship to be positive, but in order for it to be shared, it is necessary to find the conditions that adapt to the specificity of the sector and the needs of workers, the flexibility of working times, types of contracts, health and safety, the system of economic incentives, ancillary allowances and for means of transport. The negotiation is open and the relatively short timeframe will engage the union and the company in a close discussion, which requires a consistent commitment based on fairness and transparency, avoiding leaks forward in full compliance with trade union relations ”, commented the union.

JUST EAT SILURA DELIVEROO, GLOVO AND MORE

In all this Just Eat moves in solitude. And the intentions were already clear in November, when it was called out of the sector contract signed by Assodelivery, which among others represents Deliveroo, Glovo, Uber Eats and Social Food, with the right-wing union Ugl. In fact, Just Eat had (and has) torpedoed competitors, contractually speaking.

THE ASSODELIVERY CONTRACT

The contract, the one signed between Assodelivery and Ugl – criticized by the other unions and by the Ministry of Labor – in fact, maintains the status quo: it does not frame workers as employees, but has only the aim of increasing the protection of the riders who operate as self-employed workers in the Italian food delivery industry. The contract, in fact, provides for a minimum fee of 10 euros per hour worked. Supplementary compensation is also provided, equal to 10%, 15% and 20% in correspondence with one, two or three of the following conditions: night work, holidays and bad weather. An hourly incentive of 7 euros is included in the national contract, even in the case of the absence of job offers, for the first 4 months from the opening of the service in a new city. Also introduced a bonus system, equal to 600 euros for every 2000 deliveries made, and rules for the protection of privacy ( details here ).
